Lead'em By A Suburban

Read the following Article that is in Sporting Clay Magazine

Daniel Pugh

In February 2007, 10 year old Daniel Pugh came to see me. It was the first time he had fired a shotgun. Within four hours of teaching him the unit lead method, he shot a 25 straight at skeet. That year he was the HOA Champion for the Johnson county 4 H team. This year Daniel participated in the 4-H 2008 Shooting Sports Games in San Antonio.

Here is an e mail that I received from his proud father:-

Mr. Blakeley:

Daniel participated in the 4-H 2008 Shooting Sports Games Shotgun Division State Championship last week in San Antonio. These are the results. He hit 49-50 in skeet. Thank you for the great foundation and basics that he got while working with you. Daniel fired a shotgun for the first time with you at Elm Fork in February of 2007. He was consistently hitting skeet targets within a short period of time. He told me that he applied what you told him when he won the State Championship.

Junior Division
American Skeet - State Champion
American HOA - Runner Up
6 Event HOA - Runner Up
4 Event HOA - 3rd Place

SOME RECENT E MAILS:-

Wednesday, 3rd February 2010.

 Pete,

The new book and DVD are excellent.  My scores have dramatically improved by using the methods.  Just thought I would let you know.  Good Job!

Dear Mr. Blakeley,

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your dvd. For me, obtaining the sight picture was extremely helpful in actually being able to understand the correct amount of lead to apply and to actually "see the lead". The eye cam shots give the student instant feedback of what he should see on any given target. So many other videos show instructors breaking birds and explaining what they do rather than actually showing the student what they should see in order to break the target. This is the fundamental difference your instruction and other "watch me break targets" instruction. Great job!! I highly recommend your video.

 Dear Peter,

I have recently purchased a copy of 'Successful Shotgunning' as a result of web surfing and reading some of your ideas from articles in shooting magazines. Anyhow what I would like to say to you is that your book is head and shoulders above anything that I have ever read related to shooting a shotgun. Your book is clear and articulate, written with a logic that has enabled me to file all that I already know into a much larger and complete body of knowledge which I did not fully understand, until now. Your book has 'joined the dots' for me. I say again, your ability to teach and articulate, keeping everything in perspective is commendable. I have also recently viewed your latest DVD at a friends house. I intend to get my own copy and accompanying book fairly soon. Before signing off there is one thing that I would like to ask, and that is when calculating units of lead, do you calculate out from the front bead or the side of the barrel nearest the target? Thanks again.

Yours Sincerely,
Danielle Skrokov

PS. Peter you probably get a fair bit of mail all the time. Just letting you know this is from Australia.

“Just a note…after taking part in the Competitive Edge tournament at Elmfork on Sunday, Travis had more than enough punches to be an A class shooter.  He did not actually think that he did as well as he wanted but it must have been a hard day for everyone as he was tied for 2nd on one course and tied for 1st on the other course.  NOT TOO BAD!!!  Can’t tell I am a proud mama, can you!!!”

 “Pete,

I finally made the trip to Kansas over the Thanksgiving holidays.  I had great work from the dogs and thanks to you I held up my end of the bargain and shot the birds they pointed.  I was 100% on pheasant.  I only had one bird that was not killed cleanly on my first shot but one of my setters, Libbie was able to make a difficult retrieve and save the day.   I passed up on several shots on quail because I had pheasant loads in the gun but I did make one of the best quail shots of my life, a long shot across a creek, up a hill on a bird going straight up over a tree.  Thank you for working with me this fall.”

 “Pete,

I can’t believe how effective my lessons have been.  Your advice to calculate range using the houses on a skeet field makes so much sense.  I can now hit 80-90% of long crossing targets that I never connected with in the past.  Great stuff!”

This new Sunrise Productions release is superb.  The classroom graphics, Eye-Cam® shots and over-all high definition presentation make it without doubt the best target reading DVD ever produced.

Custom Gun Fitting

What exactly is a custom a gun fit? We often hear it said; "we aim a rifle but we point a shotgun." Unlike a rifle, there is no back sight on a shotgun and to use one to full potential, the users eye must become the back sight. Becausewe are all different shapes and sizes, alterations must be made to the dimensions of the stock to achieve this. So can you use a shotgun without having it fitted? Of course. The shotgun, with its wide pattern, is a forgiving weapon. I have no doubt that you will hit some of the birds some of the time with a gun that doesn't fit properly. But you will hit more with a gun that does. As you mount a badly fitted gun, if your eye is out of alignment with the rib by as little as a quarter of an inch at the gun end, this will translate into several feet or more at 30 yards.

A perfectly fitted gun depends on two essential ingredients: -

1. A flawless gun mount.
2. The skill of the gun fitter.
